Catch Weight Management Concepts for Dynamics GP

Catchweights addresses the particular challenging unit of measure issue that is most commonly found in the meat and produce business.

Sometimes called random or variable weights, it relates to a unit of measure schedule where the conversions are nominal rather than fixed so that, for example, an item described as a five-pound pack may vary in weight from case to case.

The customer ordered by case, but we bill by the eventual poundage of the boxes sold.   To manage this fully implies tracking to separate units of measure at all times, so it's possible to see the total pounds in stock, on which valuation and cost of sales is based, but also the number of cases for counting and selling purposes.

This is referred to as Dual Quantity Tracking and has implications for every transaction that affects inventory from purchasing through selling and returns, to adjustments and stock count.
